Ethapazham Pachadi / Ethakka Pachadi / Sweet Plantain Curry
Most of us are familiar with Curry and know it to be savory, spicy most of the time. However, there are many curry type dishes, of a sweeter nature. There are indeed lots of chicken and meat curries that are sweeter in flavor across Europe, Hawaii, Argentia, Spain, Thailand, Malaysia, Philipines (to name a few)… Sweet Vegetarian Curries are lesser known.
In Kerala, there are a variety of sweet curries that are totally vegetarian. Pumpkin, Pineapple, Mango, Plantains, etc.. are often used to make sweet curries, the base being made with coconut and yogurt. Especially during the Onam festivals, you will see even curries made with Grapes!
Plantain is available throughout Kerala, and most households have this growing in their backyard. It is available at most Indian supermarkets as well. Raw plantain is used to make savory vegetable dishes. Once they get per, they are used for chips and riper still, for sweet snacks and sweet curries.
My last post was for a pan-cooked flourless Plantain cake ( Kai Pola ). And today I am sharing one of most love sweet curries. Ethakka Pachadi. A lightly sweet and sour preparation, this is a great secondary curry along with rice (Especially Kerala rice). Try it to add variety to your next meal!
