Inji Puli | Puli Inji

Inji Puli or ‘Puli Inji’ is a delicious, sweet, hot and sour ginger chutney from the state of Kerala in India. Made with extra-finely chopped ginger, jaggery syrup, tamarind extract and green chillies along with some other simple spices. Truly a  mouth lip-smacking condiment /accompaniment to serve alongside the main dish. Made in large batches, it can be kept for months like pickles.

Inji Puli is often served along with rice and especially as a part of the Onam Sadhya.  It is great served with any type of rice dish and even grilled dishes as a dip.

How to make Inji Puli | Puli Inji | Sweet and Spicy Ginger Tamarind Chutney – Recipe at a glance:

  • Soak tamarind in hot water and separately Boil Jaggery in water till dissolved.
  • Chop ginger very finely and green chillies into rounds.
  • Saute sequence of spices and saute the green chillies and ginger till fragrant.
  • Add the strained Jaggery solution and boil till somewhat thickened and syrupy. Add tamarind solution and boil till a thickened consistency is achieved. Serve at room temperature.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large lime-sized ball of Tamarind pulp
  • 100 – 115 gms Jaggery (Cane Sugar)
  • 30 gms / 3 Tbsp fresh ginger
  • 4-5 hot green chillies, cut into rings
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • large pinch Fenugreek seeds
  • 1 Dried Red Chilli, broken
  • 1 stalk Curry leaves
  • 1/8 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/8 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 2 Tbsp Coconut Oil
