Green Peas Masala with Potato

This Green Peas Masala with Potato is a simple to make vegetarian curry with thick gravy, suitable for parotta, appam, idiyappam etc… I was prompted by nostalgia to re-create the taste from a college canteen. I used to have this on the rare occasion when I got really hungry at college. Most days, I never had lunch, and just drank juice. Yes, that led to a lot of teasing from my friends. I had a large green bottle of juice that I would take to college and most of the time, it was my lunch.

You can imagine how hungry I would be when I got home after 5 pm. Lol.

If I ever did get hungry, I would head down to the canteen and the only thing that I liked was this combination of parotta with green peas masala.. If it wasn’t available that day, I would go hungry.

One day I just got the craving for this, and I made green peas curry 3 days in a row, to get the taste right. Here’s the recipe.

How to make Green Peas Masala with Potato- Recipe at a glance:

  • Cook peas and potatoes till tender.
  • Prepare masala paste by sauteeing and then grind to a paste.
  • Return the paste to wok and cook along with withground paste and spice.
  • Simmer, temper and garnish.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Green Peas, soaked in water overnight
  • 2 Potatoes, peeled and chopped into small cubes
  • 5 Tbsp Coconut oil, divided
  • 2 tsp Coriander Seeds
  • 2 Dried Chillies, broken
  • 2 Onions, sliced
  • 2 Green chillies, slit
  • 1 tsp Ginger-Garlic Paste
  • 2 Tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Nadan Garam Masala (divided)
  • 1/2 cup Grated Coconut
  • Salt to taste(about 1 tsp)
  •  Fresh Coriander to garnish
  • Tempering: { 2 tsp Coconut Oil, Green Chillies to taste,sliced }
