Thayir Sadam (South Indian Curd Rice)

Today we’re making a wholesome, easy-to-make, South Indian Comfort food called Thayir Sadam or Curd(Yogurt) Rice.
Thayir Sadam, is the Tamil name, where ‘thayir’ means yogurt, and ‘sadam’ means rice. Furthermore, across Southern India, it has other names too such as,  Daddonjanam (Andhra Pradesh & Telangana) and Mosaranna (Karnataka).

It is typically served as a cooling dish, often at the end of the main meal, although it may be served as a meal on its own with some simple sides. Additionally, it is served as an offering to the gods, at Hindu temples, and at wedding ceremonies.
Thayir Sadam is a simple dish of seasoned rice, that is mixed with beaten yogurt and then tempered according to one’s preference.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Raw rice or Parboiled Rice (I regularly use Thai Jasmine Rice)
  • 1 vegetable stock cube (optional)
  • 7 1/2 cups water
  • 225-25 gms Thick set yogurt
  • 3 Tbsp freshly chopped Coriander leaves
  • 1/2-3/4 cup cashew nuts

For Tempering:

  • 3 Tbsp Sunflower oil plus 2 tsp, divided
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 Sprig of Fresh Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Ginger, finely minced
  • 2-3 Shallots, sliced
  • 2 small Green chillies chopped
  • 1/4 tsp Asafoetida/ Hing
  • 1/8 tsp Cumin powder
