Smoked Salmon Bagel Sandwich

This Smoked Salmon Bagel Sandwich is something I took a liking to while holidaying in Switzerland in 2019. There were so many sandwich shops and bakeries everywhere, and I wanted to try everything in sight! I will always have a soft spot for good sandwiches!

In between train rides and soaking up the breathtaking beauty that is Switzerland, we once had to run if we were not to miss the next train. So our lunch was a few packed sandwiches and this one, in particular, was my favorite!  I love soft Bagel sandwiches and with Smoked Salmon, cream cheese, and Avocado.. this one just hit the spot!

Now smoked salmon is somewhat of an acquired taste, and also good Smoked salmon is not so easy to find everywhere. You could replace it with your favorite sandwich ham. Read on..to know about choosing the right salmon and for the simple yummy recipe.

What is Smoked Salmon?

Smoked salmon is a preparation of salmon, typically a fillet that has been cured, and hot or cold – smoked. Due to its moderately high price, smoked salmon is considered a delicacy.

There are primarily two methods of smoking Salmon. Hot Smoked Method and the Cold Smoked Method. In the hot smoked method, salmon is smoked at a higher temperature giving the salmon a more fully cooked look and texture. It also becomes smokier flavored. In the cold smoked method, salmon is smoked at a lower temperature for a much longer time. The salmon will not look cooked and resembles sushi salmon. The smoky flavor is also milder. Cold Smoked Salmon is preferred as more nutrients and healthy fats are preserved.

There are also two main types of salmon: wild and farm-raised.. Wild is obviously the better choice. They are fish that live a natural life cycle, consuming natural diets from the ocean. The nutrients are much higher.

How to choose good Smoked Salmon?

Look for clean smoked salmon with little or no dark edges. The meat should not be dark either. The dark edges are not trimmed properly and the dark meat is the muscle that goes-  off-tasting quicker and will affect the entire fillet. The smoked salmon slices should best be very thin.

The salmon should also not be slimy and the shelf life should be very short. 2-3 weeks is quite long for smoked salmon.

So look for cold-smoked, wild-caught salmon with no sugar listed in the ingredients. That’s the best. And Scottish salmon is widely regarded as the best in the world. Fish reared in the nutrient-rich waters off the north and northwest of Scotland.

How long can smoked Salmon sit out at room temperature?

Raw smoked salmon is generally safe to eat for longer in good conditions (Cool climate, Proper smoking technique). Farm-grown salmon will last longer than wild salmon due to the antibiotics that are fed to it. Commercial Smoked salmon contains preservatives and nitrates and is considered safe to consume at room temperature for up to 3 hours. However, personally, I like to serve it fresh from the fridge.

  • Add cold cream cheese and fillings to the sliced bagel.

Ingredients (For 2 Sandwiches – double as needed):

  • 2 Soft Bagels or Pumpernickle Bagels
  • 5-8 thin slices of Smoked Cold Salmon
  • 1 small Fresh sliced avocado (A few slices or diced)
  • 1 tsp Fresh Dill or parsley, chopped
  • 2 tsp Spring onion or chives, finely chopped
  • 4 -6 Tbsp Spreadable cream cheese (flavored with chive or garlic is good)
  • 1 Persian Cucumber, very thinly sliced
  • 1 Tomato, diced
  • A few rings of sliced red onion
  • 1 tsp drained capers
