Restaurant Style Chilli Chicken

Chilli Chicken is hands down, one of the most popular items on Indochinese ala carte menus. It is served as a starter, with fried rice, noodles, bhature or parathas. There are a zillion recipes out there to make it. This is how I get it to taste just like my favourite restaurant chilli chicken. The chicken morsels are extremely tender here and soaks up the sauce beautifully. Check out the video.

How to make Restaurant Style Chilli Chicken- Recipe at a glance:

  • Marinate chicken with simple ingredients for 15 minutes.
  • Make a simple batter. Add the marinated chicken and set aside for another 15 minutes.
  • Deep fry the marinated, battered chicken morsels, till tender and cooked.
  • Chop up sauce ingredients and set aside sauces, condiments.
  • Make the simple sauce by sauteing the simple ingredients and condiments.
  • Add the fried chicken morsels and toss through.
  • Enjoy Restaurant-style, delicious, easy Chilli Chicken at home!

Ingredients:

  • 350 gms bite-size chicken pieces (450 gms if using skinless,bone-in chicken, which I prefer)
  • 1 red onion, cut into squares
  • 1 green bell pepper/capsicum, cut into 2 inch thin slices
  • 3 Tbsp green chillies, slices (or to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp minced Garlic
  • Oil for deep frying plus 3 Tbsp( sunflower oil)
  • 1 Tbsp light soy sauce (more if needed)
  • 4 Tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 3 Tbsp Red chilli sauce
  • 1 Tbsp vinegar
  • 1/4-1/2 tsp black pepper powder

Marination

  • 1/4 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp pepper powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp lime juice

Batter:

  • 2 Tbsp Plain flour
  • 2 Tbsp Cornflour / Cornstarch
  • 1/4 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp pepper powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp minced Garlic
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp light soy sauce

  1. If I plan to order some chicken dish from outside, it has to be Chilli Chicken. That is why this recipe amused me so much with your title about restaurant style chilli chicken. I am going to try preparing it at home so that I can prevent wasting my money on hotel food. Great post and extremely helpful.
