Simple Malabar Fish Fry

An extremely simple to make Fish fry to serve along with Rice. The simplicity paired with how tasty it turns out makes this a regular at my place. The video for this recipe is only available on my Malayalam channel.

Simple Malabar Fish Fry - tasty and quick

Ingredients:

Fish, suitable for frying (See notes) 500 gms
Garlic 5 large cloves
Ginger 1 thumb-sized piece
Kashmiri Chilli powder 1 Tbsp
Fennel powder 1 tsp
Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
Ground Cinnamon (powder) 2 large pinches
Ground Cloves 1 large pinch
Salt (about 1/2 tsp) To taste
Coconut oil for shallow frying As needed
Curry leaves 2 sprigs
Onion rings & Lemon wedges to serve As needed




Method:

  1. Rinse the fish well. Rub with salt. Rinse once again.
  2. If using whole fish make sure it is cleaned well, and make gashes in it, for the marinade to penetrate.
  3. Crush the garlic and ginger, to a fine paste. Add this and all the spice powders as well as salt to the fish. Rub well and marinate 30 minutes at least- up to 3 hours.
  4. Heat coconut oil for shallow frying in a skillet.
  5. Lay the fish in one layer and fry on medium heat till browned on one side about 3 minutes. Do not fry fish on high flames.
  6. Flip over and fry the second side.
  7. When the fish is almost fried through add the curry leaves and toss well.
  8. Remove the fish to a serving plate.
  9. Optional – Add the onion rings and toss very briefly in the pan oils.  Don’t allow the onion to go soft we just want to flavour it lightly with the pan residue. Garnish the fish with this OR just serve the onions rings fresh and place the fried fish on top. Place lime or lemon wedges on the side, to be squeezed over the fish as desired.
  10. Serve Simple Malabar Fish Fry, hot with rice.

Notes:

  • Fish can be whole, fish cleaned and slit with gashes OR fish steak slices like I used here.
  • If you do not have powdered cinnamon and cloves, add the wholespice along to the ginger and garlic and crush it to a paste along with these.
  • I take this recipe to another level with a different technique in – this recipe. It is so tasty, you’ll want to try it out too.
