Simple Chocolate Marble Cake

Description

Mixing two batters for a marbles effect, this method has been around since the 19th century, Here is a simple recipe for Chocolate Marble Cake

Ingredients:

Instructions

  1. Sift the cake flour and baking powder into a bowl.  Set aside.
  2. Beat together the sugar and butter till smooth and creamy.
  3. Add one egg at a time, beating between each addition.
  4. Add the sifted ingredients and fold in just till incorporated.
  5. Divide the batter into two equal portions. Sift the cocoa powder into one and add vanilla extract to the other. Mix once again with a spatula.
  6. Butter a  medium-sized baking pan lightly and line with grease-proof baking paper.
  7. Pour in the vanilla batter.  Tap gently on the countertop.
  8. Now add ladles full of chocolate batter spaced evenly into the vanilla batter.
  9. Now take a table knife and create swish patterns through the batter without over mixing.
  10. Bake at 160ºC/320ºF for 40-50 minutes, till a toothpick inserted in the center, comes out clean.
  11. Place baking pan on a wire rack and leave to cool. Release the edges of the cake by going around it with a sharp knife and then invert.

Note

  • I always use salted butter. If you are using unsalted butter, add an 8th of a teaspoon salt to the sifted flour mixture.
  • Add orange zest instead of vanilla extract for a different flavor.
