Parippu Vada – Lentil / Dal Fritters

If you ask me what my favourite Kerala tea-time snack is. I will instantly say Parippu vada! Not that I don’t like popular choices like Pazham Pori and Uzhunu Vada. Parippu vada is just my favourite. I gravitate towards it in a tea snack spread! Lol. The crunch, the texture, the scent of freshly fried Parippu vadas in coconut oil..

So you can imagine, I have tried to make these at home a lot, before coming to my favourite recipe. I experimented with various dals, and fresh ingredients as well as spices.  This is my favourite!

The lentils used for these fritters are the split and husked dal from Dried Green Peas and Black Chickpeas (Peas Dal and Chana Dal)

Peas Dal / Mattar Dal… is different from Tur dal, although it looks similar. Tur dal may be used instead, although I prefer Peas dal. Peas dal is more popularly used.

How to make Parippu Vada – Lentil / Dal Fritters- Recipe at a glance:

  • Soak lentils.
  • Finely chop fresh ingredients.
  • Finely chop soaked and dried lentils in a processor.
  • Mix everything together and add salt.
  • Press into firm fritters and deep fry in coconut oil.

Ingredients:

  • 200 gms/1 cup Peas Dal
  • 1/4 cup Chana dal
  • 1 1/2 cup Shallots
  • 5 Dried Red chillies
  • 3 small hot green chillies
  • 1 small piece of Ginger
  • 2 sprigs Curry leaves
  • 2 sprigs Coriander leaves
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • Coconut oil for frying
