Paneer Butter Masala

Who can say no to some delicious Paneer? Wherever it may have originated from (Iran? Afghanistan?), there are theories out there. The fact is that Paneer is known as an Indian Cheese. It is made from curdled milk using natural acid(usually lemon juice).

The distinct traits of Paneer are that it is an unaged cheese, it is a soft cheese and it does not melt! This is why it is so perfect in tikka masala gravies or butter masalas like this one! This Paneer Butter Masala is the easiest way to make it, and I always get so many compliments whenever I make it. I was always waiting to get a better picture to post it but seems like after cooking everyone always finishes it so quickly while it’s hot.. I never get around to taking a good picture.

How to make Paneer Butter Masala – Recipe at a glance:

  • Chop onion, fresh paneer, and prepare tomato puree(unless you’re using store-bought).
  • Saute onion, ginger-garlic paste, and add tomato puree. Cook down correctly with the addition of spices in sequence.
  • Finish off with cream and garnish.

Ingredients:

  • 400 gms Paneer cubes(freshly cut from a fresh block is always better than ready frozen cubes!) And homemade is better still!!
  • 1 medium-sized red onion, chopped finely
  • 2 tsp Ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 1/2 cups Tomato puree
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds – this provides authentic touch, do not to omit
  • 1 1/2 tsp Garam Masala (North Indian or Punjabi style)
  • 1/2 tsp Kashmiri Chilli powder
  • 1 1 1/2 tsp Kasuri Methi or more – this provides authentic touch, do not to omit
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp thick Cream-  plus additional for serving (optional)
  • 3 Tbsp fresh coriander leaves
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp oil OR 1 1/2 Tbsp butter and 1 Tbsp Sunflower oil
  • Salt to taste
