Keerai Paruppu (South Indian Creamy Spinach Dal)
Keerai Paruppu or South Indian style Dal with Spinach is a creamy textured preparation of dal, without adding any cream.
It is a hearty and tasty vegetarian Dal Curry that may be served with white rice or roti. This recipe is more of a Tamil style of preparing dal, which I personally love a lot. Quite different from North Indian Dal tadkas, or Kerala Parippu Kootan.
In this recipe, green peas dal is used( that is split yellow peas), which are yellow in color and may look like tur dal or chana dal but they offer a different flavor altogether. You can use moong dal if you can not find split (yellow) green peas.

Ingredients:
- 250 gms Spinach or suitable Greens of choice – see notes
- 1/2 cup Split Yellow Peas
- Small lime-sized ball of tamarind pulp
- 1 Large handful of shallots, peeled
- 1 handful of large garlic cloves. peeled
- Green chilies to taste, sliced
- 2 small green eggplants/brinjal
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1/8 tsp ground Cinnamon
- Pinch of Garam Masala
- Salt to taste(1 tsp)
Tempering:
- 2 Tbsp oil
- 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
- Pinch fenugreek seeds
- 2 dried red chillies, broken
- 1 red onion, chopped
- 1 /8 tsp Asafoetida
