Fish Curry without Fish – Vegan Fish Curry 

It tastes just like Kerala Fish curry, yet it is Vegan. And no it is not a Millenials recipe, it’s actually a traditional one. It’s a lovely curry for my Vegan friends to try out. You need raw plantain with is our substitute for fish in this recipe.

My mother told me stories of how in the olden days when fish curry was a daily item on the menu, in a large household.  The base for the curry was always started early in the morning even before the fish arrived. And noone would know what the daily catch was untill the fish monger showed up at the home.  Some days, due to weather and other circumstances, he would not arrive and those days there would be no fish. Still, everyhome, had lenty of vegetables growing and this curry would be made vegetarian using ingredients, like chinese potato (koorka) or raw plantains. The vegetable must be cooked tender in the curry everyone enjoys it just the same.

How to make Fish Curry without Fish ( Vegan Fish Curry) – Recipe at a glance:

  • Cut plantains.
  • Make coconut paste. 
  • Boil the coconut paste with spices and pot tamarind.
  • Add the plantain slices and cook till tender.
  • Temper by frying shallots and curry leaves in coconut oil and add to curry.

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 pieces Fish tamarind, according to sour taste
  • 2 plantains
  • Chilli powder as needed
  • Salt to taste (1 tsp )
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk

To be ground to a smooth paste:

  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 2 shallots
  • 1 small green chilli
  • 1 1/2 tsp Kashmiri chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp hot chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/4 turmeric powder
  • 5-6 Fresh curry leaves

Tempering:

  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 2-3 fenugreek seeds
  • 5-6 shallots, sliced
  • 2 sprigs curry leaves
