Croque Madame / Croque Monsieur
Croque monsieurs were served in Parisian cafes as early as 1910. The earliest published material mentioning the Corque monsieur cis as early as 1918 is in the Novel “Search of Lost Time” written by Marcel Proust, where the croque monsieur is mentioned. This is indeed a Classic French Sandwich. The Croque Madame is the same sandwich, the only difference being the addition of a fried or poached egg on top.
Although there are a few theories on the invention of this Croque Monsieur Sandwich, the story goes that it was created by accident when a worker placed his ham and cheese sandwich too close to a radiator, which melted the cheese and toasted the bread and turned out very tasty!
The word croque (“crunch”), is derived from “croquer” (crunches) and “Monsieur” (gentleman, Mr. or sir). The loose translation of the name is ‘Gentleman’s Sandwich’ or ‘Gentleman’s Crunchy Bite’.
It is for all intents and purposes a classic French Sandwich containing Ham and Cheese as well as Bechamel Sauce, which is usually baked (under the broiler). And it is quite irresistible to try.
We like both versions Croque Monsieur and Croque Madame, the latter being more of a breakfast indulgence for when you are very hungry!

How to make Croque Madame / Croque Monsieur- Recipe at a glance:
- Prepare Bechamel sauce.
- Layer the baking dish with bread, cheese, ham, and bechamel sauce in the sequence mentioned.
- Bake till the top is melted and golden.
- Fry egg for Croque Madame. Serve as is for Croque Monsieur.

- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/3 cup plain flour
- 2 cups hot milk
- 1/8 tsp salt and pepper each
- 1/8- 1/4 tsp ground Nutmeg
- 1 Egg
- 1 Egg Yolk(only)
- 1/2 cup Mozzarella (grated)
- Melted butter as needed for brushing
- 8 large slices of white sandwich bread (although sourdough or brioche are often used)
- 4-8 slices of picnic ham (as desired)
- 200 gms Grated Gruyere or Emmental Cheese
