Chena Vanpayar Erissery (Kerala Yam and Beans)
Erissery is one of the ‘must-have’ items for Kerala Vegetarian Feasts. It is often made including raw plantain or pumpkin as well. However, Chena Vanpayar Erissery is our favorite. Elephant Yam (Chena) combined with Red/Brown Beans/ Cow Peas (Vanpayar) and Coconut to make a side curry that is creamy and thick in texture. My daughter always loves this and calls it ‘satisfying and comforting’ .
Very easy to prepare, I make it quite often and don’t wait for a special occasion like Onam to do so.

How to make Chena Vanpayar Erissery (Kerala Yam and Beans) Recipe at a glance:-
- Soak and cook the beans till 3/4 done.
- Peel, chop and add the rinsed yam cubes to the beans and cook till soft.
- Add seasoning and salt.
- Prepare a coconut paste with ‘added ingredients’ and add to the cooked beans and yam mixture.
- Temper with mustard seeds and shallots and add over the Erissery.
Ingredients for Chena Vanpayar Erissery (Kerala Yam and Beans)
- 1 cup Elephant yam (Chena)
- 1/2 cup Cowpeas (Vanpayar)
- 3/4 cup Grated coconut
- 3 Small hot chilies (kanthari mulaku) or green chillies to taste
- 1 Shallot
- 1 clove Garlic
- 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
- 4-5 Curry leaves
- 1/2 tsp chilli powder
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp salt
For Tempering
- 4-5 Shallots, sliced
- 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
- 2 Tbsp Coconut oil
- 1 sprig Curry leaves
- 1 long Dried red
