Shrimp or Prawns curry in coconut milk is one the most popular curried around Kerala. It is often made with only Kudampuli(Gambooge) as the souring agent. This version, containing the additional seasonal ingredients – green mangos and cooked jackfruit seeds is one that brings any Keralite to salivate in nostalgic delight.
A very quick curry to prepare. Peeling of the jackfruit seed’s outer coating is the only aspect of this dish, that requires a bit of time. But it’s well worth it.

How to make Chakkakuru Manga Chemmeen Curry (Kerala Coconut Shrimp curry with Raw Mango and Jackfruit Seeds)- Recipe at a glance:
- Peel and pre-cook the fresh jackfruit seeds.
- Add to claypot/earthenware along with spice powders, shrimp, and green mango in sequence.
- Prepare the ground coconut paste. Add to the curry and cook further seasoning and tasting as you go.
- Tempering of fried shallots and curry leaves, to add over the curry.

Ingredients:
- 100 gms Fresh Jackfruit seeds (Chakkakuru)
- 450 gms cleaned Shrimp (Chemmeen) – smaller shrimp is best
- 1/2-1 green mango, (pacha Manga) – use according to how sour the green mango is
- 1-2 small pieces of Kudampuli /Gambooge/ Fish tamarind
- 1 1/2 tsp Chilli powder (I use 1 tsp hot chilli powder and 1/2 tsp Kashmiri chilli powder for balance of spice, flavor and vibrant color)
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp salt or more to taste
- 1/2 tsp Coriander powder
Ground coconut paste:
- 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
- 2 shallots
- 1 small sprig curry leaves
For Tempering:
- 2 Tbsp Coconut oil
- 3 Shallots, sliced
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1-2 Green chillies, sliced- to taste
