Shakshuka – Poached Eggs in Spiced Sauce – great for breakfast/ brunch, snack, dinner…
If you have never heard of Shakshuka, the first thing you’re probably wondering is, ” What kind of name is that? Sounds weird! ” The dish refers to something, all mixed up or a delicious dish, from several dialects. However, I am told that in Sudan, it is used to refer to a woman, with low morals… but hey… I am sure you know and I know and everyone knows one word from another language that means something totally different and even funny/ crude in another language!
Back to Shakshuka (Shakshouka /Chakchouka / شكشوكة )
Shakshuka is the easiest and versatile poached egg breakfast dish. (It is good any time of the day actually). Eggs are poached in a spiced tomato sauce. You can add green peppers if you like, but I don’t add them. The recipes originate from Tunisia although it is very common in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. There is also a Mexican dish which s similar.
I use smoked paprika and simple spices that makes the sauce absolutely fabulous! Get some bread and scoop up some sauce along with that perfect poached egg, with the runny egg yolk as you cut through! It’s really comforting.
